Our NAIDOC Celebrations

Acknowledgment of Country

This year's NAIDOC theme is Get Up! - Stand Up! - Show Up! and that is exactly what our students did! Following the unfortunate cancellation of all NAIDOC 2021 celebrations last year due to Covid-19 lockdown, it was fantastic to kick of NAIDOC week on Wednesday, 29th of July at JJCMHS.

Our day started with a whole school NAIDOC assembly, where our Aboriginal students started off a heartfelt Aknowledgement of Country, led by Jace Morris-Ruka and Laura Vinaisi. We learnt about the history of NAIDOC with a Q & A featuring Ms Joanna Axiotis, shared the importance of the 2022 NAIDOC theme, and enjoyed reminiscing of NAIDOC themes through the years.

We were also lucky to enjoy the wisdom and story telling of Dean Widders,  a football great and community leader.

Following our assembly, we were pleased to welcome over 450 students from our local primary schools, including Gardeners Road, Eastlakes and Mascot Primary Schools.  The primary students enjoyed a snack of Wattle Seed damper with sweet golden suryp, as a treat before exploring our school grounds, including the Bush Tucker garden. The primary students and their teachers were then ushered into our school hall to enjoy the second part of their visit, the Big Night Out matineè performance.

A huge thank you to all of our teachers and student leaders, Aaron D, Jace Moris-Ruka, Jenaya Simms, Laura Vinaisi and Aliyah Watton, who helped to make this a fantastic NAIDOC 2022 Celebration for all.
