Spanish

With over 400 million native speakers worldwide, Spanish is the official language of 21 countries, making it the second-most widely spoken language in the world today.

Stage 5 Spanish (100 hours)

The 100-hour course is for Year 9 and 10 students who have not studied Spanish before. The students will gain an elementary knowledge of Spanish through their work with the course materials and immersive lessons for speaking practice. Students will develop insights into the Spanish-speaking world through their project-based learning.


Stage 6 Spanish

In Years 11 and 12, JJ Cahill Memorial High School offers courses catering for beginning students to background speakers, these include:

Spanish Beginners

2 units for each of Year 11 Preliminary and Year 12 HSC (Board Developed Course)

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their linguistic and intercultural knowledge and understanding, and the speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to communicate in Spanish. Topics covered provide contexts in which students develop their communication skills in Spanish and their knowledge and understanding of language and culture.

  • People, places and communities
  • Education and work
  • Friends, recreation and pastimes
  • Holidays, travel and tourism
  • Future plans and aspirations.

Spanish Continuers 

2 units for each of Preliminary and HSC (Board Developed Course)

Prerequisites:  200-400 hours study of the language or equivalent knowledge is assumed.

This course provides opportunities for students to develop their skills and knowledge of Spanish. Through tasks associated with a range of texts and text types, students gain an insight into the culture and language of Spanish-speaking communities through the study of a range of texts.
