Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Support

J J Cahill MHS has a long-standing relationship with Souths Cares, which is a school to work program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students for years 9–12. In this program, students are exposed to learning support in the classroom, workshops and industry visits. Furthermore, they are assisted with applications for employment opportunities or tertiary studies. Souths Cares also provide mentoring for all of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who partake in the program.

We also have an ongoing relationship with Macquarie University and its Walanga Muru program. This program is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in years 7–10. They run several workshops at the school where the students engage in leadership and cultural activities.

J J Cahill MHS holds a NAIDOC Day every year where the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students lead the celebrations. All school community members are welcome to attend and celebrate with the school.

Leadership opportunities are available and we have had students represent J J Cahill MHS at events such as ‘Speak Up’ NAIDOC public speaking competition at Parliament of New South Wales, where two of our Aboriginal leaders were the master of ceremonies.

Learning support is offered to all of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This includes in-class support, individualised learning, and mentoring from Aboriginal staff members or through external organisations such as Tribal Warrior.
