Stage 4

Stage 4 HSIE Overview

At J J Cahill Memorial High School we have chosen to semesterise Stage 4 History and Geography. This has given us the capacity to build the skills and knowledge required for future study. By dedicating time to each subject we ensure that students are equipped with deep knowledge and deep understanding of content which leads to high expectations and a marked growth in engagement in classrooms. ​


Geography

In Stage 4, students describe geographical processes that influence the features of places and environments. They describe how places are valued differently by different people. Students also investigate environmental change and hazards. 

Year 7: Nature of The World  

Topics include:

  • Landscapes and Landforms
  • Place and Liveability

Year 8: The Changing Nature of The World

Topics include:

  • Water in the World
  • Interconnections


History

In Stage 4, students describe the nature of history and archaeology, and explain their contribution to an understanding of the past. They describe major periods of historical time and sequence events, people and societies from the past.

Year 7: The Ancient World

Students investigate ancient history from the time of the earliest human communities to the end of the ancient period (approximately 60 000 BC – c. AD 650).

Topics include:

  • Overview – The Ancient World
  • Depth Study 1 – Investigating the Past
  • Depth Study 2 – The Mediterranean World
  • Depth Study 3 – The Asian World

Year 8: The Ancient to Modern World

Students can investigate medieval and early modern societies from both European and non-European perspectives, while acquiring basic skills of historical inquiry and communication.

Topics include:

  • Overview – The Ancient to Modern World
  • Depth Study 4 – The Western and Islamic World
  • Depth Study 5 – The Asia-Pacific World
  • Depth Study 6 – Expanding Contacts
