Stage 6

Ancient History

The study of Ancient History in Stage 6 enables students to:

  • develop knowledge and understanding of the ancient world, historical skills, and values and attitudes essential to an appreciation of the ancient world
  • develop a lifelong interest in the study of history
  • prepare for active and informed citizenship in the contemporary world.

Year 11 Course

The course comprises three sections. Students are required to study all three sections of the course.

1. Investigating Ancient History:

  • The Nature of Ancient History
  • Case Studies Features of Ancient Societies

2. Historical Investigation

 

Year 12 Course

The course comprises four sections. Students are required to study all four sections of the course.

  1. Core Study: Cities of Vesuvius – Pompeii and Herculaneum
  2. Ancient Societies
  3. Personalities in their Times
  4. Historical Periods 


Business Studies

Business Studies aims to develop knowledge, understanding, skills and values which enable students to make judgements about the performance of businesses in a dynamic business environment.

Extension History

The study of History Extension in Stage 6 enables students to:

  • evaluate the ideas and methodologies that are used by historians and others to construct and represent history
  • apply what they have learned to inquire into areas of historical debate and interest critically, with independence and insight
  • develop skills that support active and informed citizenship.

Legal Studies

Legal Studies develops students’ knowledge, understanding and critical thinking skills in relation to the legal system and its effectiveness in promoting a just and fair society, with a view to empowering students to participate effectively as responsible citizens at the local, national and international level.

Core Part II: The individual and the law

Core Part III: Law in practice:

The Law in practice unit is designed to provide opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of the principles of law covered in the first sections of the course. This section may be integrated with Part I and/or Part II.

Modern History

The study of Modern History in Stage 6 enables students to:

  • develop knowledge and understanding of the modern world, the skills of critical analysis, and values and attitudes essential for an appreciation of the people, forces and ideas that have shaped the modern world
  • develop a lifelong interest in the study of history
  • prepare for active and informed citizenship in the contemporary world. 

Year 11 Course

The course comprises three sections. Students are required to study all three sections of the course.

1. Investigating Modern History

● Case Studies

2. Historical Investigation

3. The Shaping of the Modern World 

Year 12 Course

The course comprises four sections. Students are required to study all four sections of the course.

  1. Core Study: Power and Authority in the Modern World 1919–1946
  2. National Studies
  3. Peace and Conflict
  4. Change in the Modern World 


Society and Culture

The central goal of Society and Culture Stage 6 is the development of social and cultural literacy and a clear understanding of the interaction of persons, societies, cultures, environments and time. The influence of other aspects of societies and cultures – including power, authority, identity, gender, technology and globalisation – is also central to the course.

Society and Culture draws on cross-disciplinary concepts and social research methods from anthropology; communication; cultural and media studies; philosophy; social psychology; and sociology.

Studies of Religion

The aim of the Stage 6 Studies of Religion syllabus is to promote an understanding and critical awareness of the nature and significance of religion and the influence of belief systems and religious traditions on individuals and within society.

NOTE: For the purposes of this syllabus the Religious Traditions are considered to be the five major religions of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism.
