Student opportunities and activities

Art Club

Our Art Club gives students the chance to explore their creativity beyond the classroom. From painting and drawing to sculpture and mixed media, members experiment with new techniques and express their ideas freely, all while building confidence and having fun together.

Art Club is ran Wednesdays, 3pm-4pm.

Band

To further extend our High Potential and Gifted students, we offer specialist band programs before and after school. These ensembles provide access to high-quality instruments and professional equipment, alongside focused guidance from experienced music staff. Students rehearse at an advanced level, refine their technical and ensemble skills, and develop the discipline and confidence required for high-level performance. Our specialists bands regularly represent the school at community performances and intra-school events, giving students meaningful, real-world performance experience.

Big Night Out

Twice a year, our Creative and Performing Arts students take the stage showcasing events that highlight their talent, teamwork and artistic growth. These performances celebrate creativity in action and provide authentic opportunities for students to share their work with the wider community.

Big Science Competition and Junior Science Olympiads

High achieving and interested students have the opportunity to participate and compete in 2 national wide science competitions. Both these competitions are used to foster and develop a passion for science and future careers in STEM. Students who achieve high results in these competitions have the opportunity to represent their country at the International Junior Science Olympiads.

Chess Club

We meet weekly in the library to play chess, learn tactics and improve our critical thinking and problem solving. Each term we put this to the test with a school wide tournament.

Choir

Choir gives students from all grades the opportunity to come together and sing once a week during break times. With a focus on friends and community, it gives students the opportunity to work on their vocal skills in a variety of areas including pitch, singing in harmony, and working together as an ensemble. Keen students are able to sign up to extra opportunities such as In Concert, where students join with other choirs around NSW in a large performance at the Sydney Opera House.

Dance

We offer student dance groups that provide similar extension opportunities in the performing arts. These ensembles allow talented dancers to train with purpose, develop advanced technique and choreography skills and perform in both school and community settings. Dance students build physical discipline, creative expression and stage presence while working collaboratively towards polished, high-quality performances.

Through music and dance, our students are challenged, supported and given authentic pathways to develop excellence in the creative and performing arts.

Guitar Club

Guitar club runs twice a week as a co-curricular program, with one group for junior students and another for more advanced players. The club builds practical playing skills, musical knowledge and confidence through regular group rehearsal and collaborative performance. It provides a relaxed, supportive environment where students can deepen their interest in guitar beyond the classroom.

HPGE Writing

The Fortnightly Writer's Club offers an opportunity for aspiring writers, poets, journalists, songwriters, playwriters, etc., to share and develop their work and passion for writing.

Externally, students are provided with the opportunity to participate in the Quest HPGE writing program with students across the local network of schools. A variety of writing competitions throughout the school year will provide aspiring writers the opportunity to showcase their talents. Competitions will be open to student from not just JJ, but our local Primary Schools, where students will compete from prizes and to have their work published in our newsletter.

Sporting Opportunities

Whether students are trying a sport for the first time or striving for competitive success, our sporting program provides opportunities for everyone to get involved, challenge themselves and build school pride. Our school offers a diverse and inclusive sporting program designed to cater for students of all abilities and interests.

Students can participate in a range of activities both during and beyond the school day. We run regular volleyball sessions before and after school for students eager to develop their skills, as well as dedicated netball coaching to support skill progression and team development.

Our students proudly represent the school at Year 7 and 8 Zone Gala Days and compete in both junior and senior knockout competitions. We are committed to growing our teams and expanding opportunities so that more students can experience the benefits of representing their school in sport.

Beyond school-based programs, we actively connect students with sporting opportunities in the local community and wider region, encouraging pathways for continued participation and excellence.

Student Representative Council (SRC)

The SRC is made up of student representatives from Years 8-12, selected by their peers. These students actively contribute to the school community, promoting leadership and fostering a caring and responsible environment.

STEAM Program

Our STEAM project offers an enriching opportunity for high potential and gifted education students from our local primary schools, selected Year 7 students and Year 8 and 9 mentors. Over a four to five week period, four selected students from each of our local primary schools will collaborate in mixed groups to design and build a solar-powered car. This interdisciplinary project is facilitated by expert staff from the Science, HSIE and/or Industrial Arts faculties, ensuring a comprehensive leaning experience.

Volleyball Team

Volleyball helps students stay active, work as a team, and improve important skills like coordination, strength, and communication.
Once a term, volleyball teams compete in the School Cups Volleyball Tournaments held at Homebush. Teams play a minimum of 3 games against other schools.

Every Morning: 8:30am - 8:50am, Junior Girls (Year 7-8) Fundamentals Training

Thursday: 3pm - 4pm, Snr/Jnr Boys Training

Monday & Thursday: Break 1, Snr/Jnr Boys Training

Friday: 8:30am - 8:50am, Friendly Game at School

Sessions are run by Mr Espinosa.
