Support Unit
At JJ Cahill Memorial High School our Support Unit assists students with Mild to Moderate Intellectual Disabilities and students with Autism which is comprised of 5 classes. Our aim is to ensure a smooth transition from school to post school options and to prepare students for independent living.
The staff include five full-time Special Education teachers and School Learning Support Officers (SLSO's).
Life Skills Courses
Students in support classes have access to comprehensive Life Skills programs which focus on skills for independent living. These courses include :

- Food Technology
- Industrial Technology
- Visual Arts
- Drama
- Music
- PDHPE
Our lessons, support and learning plans give students regular check-ins, clear communication with families and close tracking of their strengths and areas for improvement. These plans improve engagement, support stronger learning outcomes and guide smooth transitions through school and beyond.
Community Engagement
Our Support Unit actively promotes student engagement with the wider community through tailored travel training programs that build independence and confidence.
Students have access to meaningful work experience opportunities, allowing them to explore various career pathways and develop real-world skills.
The curriculum includes studies focused on work and community involvement, helping students understand their role and contribution within society.
School Participation
Students in the Support Unit are encouraged to take part in a broad range of school activities and clubs, fostering social connections and school spirit. They enthusiastically participate in competitions such as boccia, bowling, and basketball, showcasing teamwork and sportsmanship.
Additionally, our mentoring program pairs senior students with juniors to support their transition and adjustment to high school life, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.
How students access our support unit
Placement in our support unit are determined by the NSW Department of Education Learning and Wellbeing Team.
