Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Support
J J Cahill Memorial High School acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the Lands that we are privileged to work and learn on each day, the Bidjigal, Gadigal and Kameygal people of the Dharawal-speaking and Eora Nations. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, who are our knowledge holders, storytellers and teachers. We recognise the special contributions of First Nations peoples and cultures, that enrich and shape the cultural identity of our nation.
J J Cahill proudly recognises and celebrates annually NAIDOC Week, We acknowledge and honour this history, culture, achievements and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. NAIDOC Week is an important opportunity for our Aboriginal students to feel seen, valued and connected to culture, while also encouraging our school community to learn, reflect and walk together in the spirit of respect and reconciliation.
Students participate in a variety of NAIDOC activities including Aboriginal art, cultural games, sporting activities, dance performances, guest speakers and shared food experiences. Our students proudly perform Aboriginal dances in front of Elders, families, guests and the school community, creating a strong sense of pride, belonging and cultural connection for all involved.
Learning Support is available to all our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Our Aboriginal Teacher and support staff work closely with our Aboriginal students to provide learning support, mentoring and wellbeing assistance throughout their school. This includes in-class support, individualised learning assistance, regular wellbeing check-ins and creating culturally safe spaces where students feel supported and encouraged to succeed both academically and personally.
